The Famous Silk Route of the World

The many Silk Routes are also known collectively as the Silk Road. They are the traditional trading routes by which precious silks were carried from China to the Mediterranean, both by land and sea. For centuries, the production of silk was held as a secret in China, which meant it was an incredibly valuable material.

The name Seidenstrasse ("Silk Road") was invented by a German geographer in the 19th century, but the trading routes themselves date from ancient times around the second century AD.
