Guru Nanak Jayanti
also identified as Guru Nanak Gurpurab and Guru Nanak's Prakash
Utsav, commemorates the birth of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak. This is one of the
most holy events in Sikhism. Apart
from Sikhs, Hindus and other devotees of Guru Nanak's values
also rejoice this festival.
The festival is normally
similar for all Gurpurabs; only the mantras are dissimilar. The festivals generally
start with Prabhat Pheris. Prabhat Pheris are early morning pageants that commence
at the Gurudwaras and go on around the localities singing hymns. Normally two
days before the birthday, Akhand Path (a forty-eight-hour
non-stop interpreting of the Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred book of
the Sikhs) is alleged in the Gurdwaras.
