Sambalpuri Saree is an established handmade ikat or sari or
saree wherein the warp and the weft are tie-dyed before making. It is fabricated
in the Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Balangir district, Boudh District of
Odisha. The saree is a conventional women clothing in the Indian Subcontinent
consisting of a strip of untied textile ranging from 4 to 9 metres in length
that is covered over the body in different manners.
The Sambalpuri saree is made from material woven on a
hand-loom and is well-known all through India. Ranges of the Sambalpuri saree consist
of Sonepuri, Bomkai, Pasapali, Barpali, and Bapta saris, which are in high require.
Most of them have been named after their positions of origin and are commonly famous
as Pata. Paintings on Tussar sarees portraying Mathura Vijay, Raslila and
Ayodhya Vijay owe their derivation to ‘Raghurajpur patta paintings’.
